STANDARDS AND PROCEDURES
Students are not automatically covered by accident insurance while attending school. If you are interested in accident insurance, please see the office.
Appearance and Dress Code
Clothing, language, and behavior reflect the pride we take in our school and in the pursuit of learning. Adherence to appropriate dress and grooming expectations is the responsibility of the student and the parents. Enforcement of the standards is the responsibility of parents, school, staff and administration. The policy provides discretion for the principal when defining inappropriate dress.
Woodruff Elementary will follow the Logan City School District Dress Code: Clothing should be neat, clean, and cover underwear completely. Gang clothing or inappropriate insignias, phrases, or mottos will not be allowed. Additionally, clothing which promotes alcohol, drugs, or violence is prohibited. Hair should be clean and well groomed. Specific dress standards include:
Shoes are required at all times. Please wear athletic shoes and other appropriate clothing for PE and activity days. Please no shoes with wheels attached.
Halter-tops, spaghetti straps and shirts not covering midriffs are not appropriate for school.
Hats and sunglasses are not to be worn in the building.
Snowsuits and boots should be removed upon arrival at school.
Students are expected to be outside during recesses. They need to wear clothing that is suitable for the weather.
Arrival and Departure
Breakfast is served starting at 7:40 AM. The first bell rings at 8:05 AM signaling to students to make their way to class. Any student not in their seat prior to 8:20 AM is considered tardy. We encourage you to have your student to school prior to 8:10 AM to allow them time to complete daily morning work. In order for students to qualify for 100% attendance in a given month they cannot have any tardies or excused/unexcused absences. All students, with the exception of those eating breakfast at school, must use their designated entry and exit. School dismisses at 2:50 PM.
Morning Kindergarten: 8:20 AM – 11:00 AM
Afternoon Kindergarten: 12:10 PM - 2:50 PM
No Kindergarten on ½ days
Half days school dismisses at 12:20 PM
Parents should schedule appointments and vacations outside of school time whenever possible. When a child is absent, due to illness or other reasons, please leave a message on the attendance line at 755-2351 by 9:30 AM. See Utah’s School Attendance Laws Form for more information.
Parents/Guardians will have 5 days from when their child returns to school to contact the office to excuse an absence.
Drop off /Pick up policy and routine
For the safety of our students we ask that you only pick up students in one of the two designated drop off/pick up loops. Please do not leave vehicles unattended in these loops. You are also welcome to park in a designated parking spot, meet your child in or near the building and walk with them to your parked vehicle. Please do not have your child hand out birthday invitations during school hours.
Birthday treats may be distributed at the teacher’s discretion. Under health code, homemade treats are not permitted. Treats should be commercially prepared or packaged by a licensed Health Department Food Handler Permit holder.
Checking students in and out
1. Parents/guardians must first go to the office. Please do not go to the classroom first.
2. Students must be signed out on the student checkout record in the office. Students will not be released from school without confirmation from the office staff or the principal.
3. A student must check-in at the office if they arrive at school after 8:40 AM and when returning to school after checking out.
For the safety of our students, Woodruff Elementary has a closed campus policy. Students are expected to stay on campus at all times.
School fees are not permitted during the regular school day in grades K-6. You may not be charged for classroom snacks, newspapers, textbooks, field trips, art supplies, assemblies, musical instruments, or anything else that is part of the regular school day.
Your child may be asked to make a small financial donation or a donation of common household items, but cannot be penalized for failure to bring the donation.
School fees may only be charged for activities that take place before or after school or during school vacations.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents certain rights with respect to the student’s education records.
The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the District receives a request for access. Parents should submit a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect.
The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the parent believes are inaccurate or misleading. Parents should write the school principal, clearly identifying the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading.
The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. Upon request, the district discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll.
The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the district to comply with the requirements of FERPA.
NOTE: Personal information about students, known as directory information, can be made public. This information may include a student’s name, address, and telephone number. Photographs/videotapes of school and classroom activities/public performances, outstanding academic and citizenship performance are also included in this classification. If parents do not wish this information to be made public, the school must be contacted within 15 days of this notice.
Homework is an important element in students’ education. We strongly encourage parents to monitor their child’s homework and sign the homework tracker daily. If your child is sick and you would like to pick up the homework, please contact the office so that arrangements can be made. Monthly certificates are given to recognize students with 100% homework completion.
Lost and Found
Lost and found is located in the breezeway by the gym. Please label your child’s outer articles of clothing such as: coats, jackets, boots, hats, gloves, books, or sharing items. Clothing and other items will be taken to a charitable organization December 21st and May 31st.

Consequences of not following expectations
Level 1 Behaviors: Talking out, not following directions, disruptive, etc. are behaviors that are dealt with first in the classroom.
Level 2 Behaviors: Students are sent to refocus for repetitions of level 1 behavior, defiance, inappropriate language, put-downs/name calling, screaming/yelling, etc. Parents will be notified.
Level 3 Behaviors: Students are immediately sent to the principal is notified in cases of serious aggression, fighting, safe school violations, bullying, threats, sexually inappropriate behavior, property damage and multiple repetitions of level 2 behaviors. Parents will be notified and either an in school or out of school suspension will be enforced.
Hero tickets are recognitions given to students that are following our Woodruff Expectations, following our school wide social skills or that are displaying some other positive effort in helping the students, faculty, staff or community of our schools.

II. PROACTIVE STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND LIMITING THE EXCLUSION OF STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL:
A. Each school shall provide parents/legal guardians with a written copy of the school’s discipline and conduct policy.
B. School administrators, teachers, staff shall use proactive intervention strategies that anticipate problem behaviors before they occur.
C. Students shall comply with applicable rules of conduct as well as all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; and be civil and respectful to other people and obey persons in authority at the school.
III. GROUNDS FOR SUSPENSION OR EXPULSION FROM A PUBLIC SCHOOL:
A. A student may be suspended or expelled from a public school for any of the following reasons:
1. Frequent or flagrant disobedience, defiance of proper authority, or repeated disruptive behavior; including the use of foul, profane, vulgar, harassing or abusive language;
2. Willful destruction or defacing of school property;
3. Behavior or threatened behavior that poses an immediate and significant threat to the welfare, safety, or morals of other students or school personnel or to the operation of the school;
4. Possession, control, or use of alcoholic beverages defined in UCA Section 32A-1-105(2)(3)(4);
5. Behavior which threatens harm or
does harm to the school or school property, to a person associated with that person, regardless of where it occurs;
6. Commit an offense against an educator when the educator is acting in the course of employment or be subject to an enhanced degree of offense as cited in UCA Section 76-3-203.2. Crimes against educators are considered to have created an imminent danger under this policy.
7. Other behavior, speech, or actions reasonably determined by school personnel to warrant suspension or expulsion.
B. A student shall be suspended or expelled from a public school for any of the following reasons:
1. Any serious violation affecting another student, visitor, volunteer, or a staff member, or any serious violation occurring in a school building, in or on school property, or in conjunction with any school activity including:
a. The possession, control, or actual use or threatened use of a real weapon, explosive, firearm, (as identified by Federal law under Section 92 of title 18, U.S. Code) or noxious or flammable materials under 53A-3-502.
b. The actual or threatened use of a look alike weapon with intent to intimidate another person or school activities.
c. The sale, control, or distribution of a drug or controlled substance as defined in UCA Section 58-37-2, an imitation controlled substance as defined in UCA 58-37-2 or drug paraphernalia as defined in UCA 58-37a-3;
d. The commission of an act involving the use of force or the threatened use of force.
There are certain procedures that we must follow when administering medication at school in order to protect our students, abide by Utah law, and avoid the risk of liability if something goes wrong. The required procedures are as follows:
Parents must provide the school with a current (renewed at the beginning of each school year) request for medication to be given at school.
The student’s prescribing practitioner (i.e. physician, dentist, etc.) must provide a current signed statement indicating that it is medically necessary for medication to be given during school hours.
Medication must be delivered to the school in a container that has been properly labeled by a pharmacy. The information on the bottle must match the information provided on the forms.
Students may self-administer asthma medicine provided they have the proper paperwork on hand. Students may not self-administer other medications. This means they may not carry medication with them and adult supervision is required when the medication is administered.
Over the counter medications will be treated as prescription medicines and must come in the container that it was purchased in, with the above mentioned forms on file at the school.
Non-medical school personnel should administer only oral and inhalant medications.
If the drug or dosage of the medication is changed, new forms must be filled out and filed in the office.
The school district nurse may work with the school to develop an emergency plan for any student who has a medical need that may develop into a health hazard requiring medication as a treatment (i.e. anaphylactic reactions, diabetic insulin reactions, oxygen administrations.)
Orchestra is offered to 4th and 5th grade children interested in instrumental music instruction. Enrollment information is available at the office.
On healthy air days and days when the weather permits, all students will be expected to go outside for school and class recesses. If your child needs to stay inside due to a medical condition, please send a note or contact the office. Please see recess guidelines http://health.utah.gov/asthma/airquality/recess.html. Students will be held in from recess if their behavior is unsafe or disrespectful to other students.

Toys/Bikes/Scooters/Hoverboards/Roller Blades/Electronics/Cell Phones/ETC.
Toys and cell phones are not to be brought to school. Students are welcome to ride bikes, scooters or use roller blades to get to and from school. They should not be used on the playground. Classroom teachers will have a location to leave scooters for the day. Toys that are brought to school will be collected by school personnel and will be returned to a parent. All electronic equipment (cell phones, MP3/IPod player, etc) should be left at home unless permission is given by school personnel to use them.
Parents are welcome to visit their child’s classroom. Please check in at the office before visiting the classroom. Teachers can be reached at the school a half hour before and after school. Due to state law; student visitors, friends, cousins, and houseguests cannot be accommodated at school.
We encourage all parents and grandparents to volunteer per your circumstances. Please contact your child’s teacher to volunteer. For the safety of students, everyone entering the building during school hours must first check in at the office.
