Parent and Family Engagement Policy

The Board of Education of the Logan City School District recognizes that parents or legal guardians are first and often the most influential teachers their children will have. The Logan City School District has a stewardship from the parents and the community to provide the formal component of the education for each child in the Logan City School District, in partnership with parents and the community. There is overwhelming evidence of the positive effect that significant, consistent parental involvement in a child’s formal education has on the quality of the child’s education.

To this end, the Board of Education supports parent/family engagement in the Logan City School District and at each school. These will include, but not be limited to the following components:

  1. Promote responsible parenting by helping parents with:
    1. Providing a home environment that values education.
    2. Sending children to school every day, on time, and prepared to learn.
    3. Understanding the direct effect parental involvement has on the educational success of their child.
    4. Serving on decision making committees.
    5. Supporting school rules.
    6. Working with their child to understand and complete homework and contacting the child’s teachers if homework is not understood.
    7. Attending SEP (Student Education Plan) and following through by using strategies suggested for helping each child achieve his/her goals.
  2. Schools establish consistent and effective communication between teachers, administrators, and the parents of students through:
    1. Distributing regular newsletters.
    2. Using technology to foster parental engagement in their child’s education including Web sites, email, and electronic attendance.
    3. Update students progress.
    4. Giving parents information in an understandable and uniform format.
    5. Requesting Parent/Teacher or other conferences when needed.
    6. Providing SEP (Student Education Plan).
    7. Assisting non-English speaking and other parents in need of translations.
    8. Notifying parents of students at risk for failure.
    9. Implementing parental involvement outreach programs and objectives.
  3. Promote parent participation by:
    1. The Logan City School District promotes parent participation through:
      1. Inviting parents to serve on Board of Education committees.
      2. Coordinating and integrating parent engagement strategies with such programs as Parents as Teachers, Head Start, etc.
      3. Providing professional development opportunities for staff members to enhance the understanding of effective parental engagement strategies.
    2. Schools promote parent participation through:
      1. Encouraging parents to join PTA.
      2. Coordinating with PTA to provide opportunities for parents to serve as school and classroom volunteers.
      3. Encouraging parents to participate on school community councils and informing them of the election process.
      4. Reviewing with parents the school-parent compact that outlines how parents, teachers, and students will share responsibility for improving student achievement.
      5. Providing information to parents about the Family Information and Resource Center which provides instruction and training to help parents become active in their child’s education.
      6. Inviting parents to participate as encouraging spectators at school events and programs.
  4. Promote community engagement by:
  5. Encouraging community employers to support parental and community engagement that fosters student achievement, including development of policies and programs that allow their employees opportunities for greater participation in public education during school hours.

  6. Conflict resolution statement:
  7. It is essential that teachers and parents work together through ongoing communication and common goals for students. Constructive criticism, motivated by a sincere desire to improve the quality of the educational program, or to equip the schools to do their tasks more effectively is welcomed by the Board of Education.

    All conflicts are best resolved at the level where they occur. If a student or parent has an issue with a teacher, a personal conversation could resolve it. Appropriate channeling of communication involving instructional, discipline, or learning materials will be as follows:

    1. Teacher
    2. Conselor/Refocus/Social Worker
    3. Principal
    4. Superintendent or designee
    5. Board of Education

    All students benefit when parents and schools work together, are positive, and promote a partnership.

  8. The Logan Board of Education will establish a District Parent Engagement Committee that meets quarterly to continue monitoring, evaluating, and strengthening this critical partnership between home and school.

In addition to the above district policy,
Woodruff Elementary will do the following:

  1. Annually, Woodruff Elementary will convene a Title I orientation meeting, in conjunction with the “Back To School” night at the beginning of each school year. All parents will be invited and encouraged to attend. The purpose of the meeting will be to inform parents of the school’s participation under Title I and to explain Title I requirements and parents’ rights to be engaged. Teachers will also inform parents regarding the curriculum used in the school, the forms of assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.
  2. Engage parents in the development of its school improvement plan.
  3. Use Action Teams and the Community Council as a vehicle for the process of school review and improvement.
  4. Invite input from parents regarding academic goals.
  5. Share a summary of achievement data with Community Council and the PTA.
  6. Discuss scientifically-based research instructional practices with CommunityCouncil and PTA.
  7. Provide annual training to Woodruff staff on effective parent engagement strategies.
  8. Schedule at least 3 annual parent engagement seminars or literacy/math nights to build effective parental engagement strategies. (Try to have one fall, winter and spring). Funding for these events will come from Title I funds.
  9. Allocate Title I funds to support a full-time, Spanish speaking parent liaison.
  10. Parents will be encouraged to complete a parent engagement survey that will elicit feedback on current activities and request input for future efforts.
  11. Summary of survey results will be shared along with plans to address identified needs and recommendations.
